Driver resisting arrest sprayed, tased

Island County Sheriff’s Deputies were forced to use pepper spray and a Taser on a suspect late Friday night.

Ronald Bone, 44, was arrested on suspicion of refusing to identify himself to police, possessing a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and possessing a small amount of marijuana after deputies pulled his vehicle over during a routine traffic stop.

According to a report filed by Deputy Robert Davison, Bone was driving on Crescent Harbor Road, just east of Crescent Acres Drive. Bone’s vehicle did not have a license plate light, and one of his tail lights didn’t appear to be working, so Davison pulled him over.

As Davison and Reserve Deputy Scott Fortin prepared to approach the vehicle, Davison noticed Bone appear to lean forward and reach under the driver’s seat.

As Davison was talking with Bone, Fortin noticed a large knife on the driver’s side floorboards. Davison asked Bone about the weapon, and Bone attempted to push the knife under the seat with his foot. Fortin also noticed a handgun on the floor and warned Davison.

Retreating behind his vehicle and drawing his gun, Davison ordered Bone to step out of the vehicle, put his arms in the air and turn away from the deputy.

Bone complied with the instructions, but when Davison asked him to walk backward toward the patrol car, Bone turned around, made an obscene gesture and shouted an expletive.

Davison ran toward Bone and “assisted him to the ground.” Because Bone was resisting, deputy Fortin deployed the Taser by contact to the back of Bone’s neck. Davison’s report states that the Taser shock only enraged Bone and caused him to partially stand up.

Davison then sprayed Bone in the face with a one-second burst of department-issued pepper spray which confused Bone and enabled deputies to handcuff him and seat him in the back of the patrol car.

During a search of Bone’s vehicle, the deputies also discovered a small amount of suspected marijuana in an unlocked briefcase. The gun was found to be a pellet gun replica of a semi-automatic Smith and Wesson handgun.

Bone was transported to Whidbey General Hospital to be examined by a doctor, then booked into the Island County Jail.
