An Oak Harbor man with a habit of eluding police in a white BMW is wanted on two different $25,000 arrest warrants, according to court documents.
In the most recent case, prosecutors charged 54-year-old Shane E. Larsen in Island County Superior Court Jan. 23 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and driving with license suspended.
A judge approved a $25,000 warrant for Larsen’s arrest the same day.
The deputy wrote in his report that he saw Larsen driving a white BMW without a front license plate near the intersection of Highway 20 and Ault Field Road north of Oak Harbor on Oct. 20. The deputy activated his lights and sirens and pursued the car, which fled at a high rate of speed.
Larsen abruptly turned from the highway onto Fakkema Road and nearly caused a collision, the report states. The chase led to Wilson Road, Torrance Lane, Appian Way, Sleeper Road, Taylor Road, Frostad Road and Dike Road, the report states. Larsen’s car reached speeds of up to 94 mph and sped through stop signs, the report states.
The deputy failed to negotiate the corner of East Frostad Road and Dike Road, the report states. The patrol car struck a guardrail and was rendered temporarily inoperable. The deputy lost sight of the white BMW.
A citizen stopped to talk to the deputy and reported that a white BMW was speeding in the wrong lane on Jones Road and nearly caused a head-on collision.
In the other case, prosecutors charged Larsen on Oct. 25 with attempting to elude and reckless driving. The judge issued a $25,000 arrest warrant.
The report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office states that he was in his patrol vehicle in Oak Harbor on Sept. 26 when he saw Larsen drive by in the white BMW. Larsen at the time had a suspended license and was wanted on a felony warrant from the Department of Corrections.
The deputy attempted to pull the car over on Goldie Road, but it sped off toward Highway 20, turned into a restaurant parking lot, circled the building and drove back onto Goldie Road. The high-speed chase led to O’Leary Street, but the chase was terminated for safety reasons.
The deputy wrote that Larsen had successfully attempted to elude officers in the white BMW in the past, often resulting in police terminating the chase because of Larsen’s reckless driving.
