A 53-year-old Oak Harbor man who managed to evade police multiple times in his car is wanted on a $25,000 warrant, according to court documents.
Prosecutors charged 53-year-old Shane Larsen in Island County Superior Court Oct. 25 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and reckless driving. If convicted of the charges against him, Larsen could face up to one year and two months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
The judge issued the warrant for Larsen’s arrest on the same day.
The report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office states that he was in his patrol vehicle on Northeast Koetje Avenue in Oak Harbor on Sept. 26 when he saw Larsen drive by in a vehicle he recognized. Larsen at the time had a suspended license and was wanted on a felony warrant from the Department of Corrections.
The deputy wrote that Larsen had successfully attempted to elude officers in the white BMW in the past, often resulting in police terminating the chase because of Larsen’s reckless driving.
As a result, the deputy attempted to pull the car over on Goldie Road, but it sped off toward Highway 20. The deputy wrote that he got a good look at Larsen when the vehicle turned into the Sushi Moto parking lot and circled the building before turning back onto Goldie Road.
Larsen drove at a high rate of speed on Goldie Road, then turned onto Northeast 16th Avenue. The high-speed chase continued on the highway, onto Northeast Narrows Avenue and back to Northeast 16th Avenue and Northeast O’Leary Street. Larsen cut across lanes of traffic without signaling, causing cars on the highway to stop abruptly; one car went into a ditch to avoid a collision, the report states.
Larsen sped at 85 mph on O’Leary Street and went through a stop sign, the deputy wrote. At that point the pursuit was terminated. The deputy searched Larsen’s usual haunts in Oak Harbor but was unable to find him.
