With temperatures finally back below freezing, it appears that several Whidbey drivers forgot how to drive on the ice.

As emergency crews were cleaning up a two-car crash on Highway 20, near Krieg Construction, they were called to a second crash on Jones Road.

The first accident happened Thursday when a Honda Accord lost control and spun out of control across the lanes of travel, Island County Sheriff’s Deputy Lane Campbell said.

The Honda hit the dirt embankment before colliding with a Lincoln Continental, Campbell said.

The two passengers in the Lincoln and the one in the Honda were taken to Whidbey General Hospital. Campbell did not have the names of the passengers and no information was available on their condition.

As crews mopped up debris and fluids from Highway 20, another call dispatched them to Jones Road, where another crash occurred.

A woman was driving her Jeep Cherokee on Jones Road when she hit a patch of ice. After swerving for approximately 100 yards, she hit nose first in a ditch and her jeep rolled. Crews transported her to Naval Hospital Oak Harbor. She suffered only minor injuries, Campbell said.

“This was clearly a case of speed too fast for conditions,” he said. “People just aren’t slowing down.”

Temperatures are expected to remain chilly for the next few days.
