With regards to the danger at Ala Spit, a similar situation is in play at Dugualla Bay, where the Whidbey Island Land Trust and Washington State Department of Transportation are in the process of building a new section of dike from Frostad Road to the parking area on the current dike.

When this is completed, they plan to remove several feet from the top, along with all the rip-rap, rock, off the sides of the existing dike to the east along with opening an aproximately 60-foot section of the old dike allowing the bay to flood the eastern field.

What concerns me is with the removal of the top of the old portion of the dike, down to high tide line, it will soon be a similar problem.

Being third generation on this property, I know the tides and currents as they affect this area, and can say that what they are planning is another Ala Spit disaster in progress.
