Eagles top Coupeville in match for first place | Soccer

Klahowya tightened its grip on first place in the Olympic League soccer standings with a 5-2 win at Coupeville Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The Eagles are now 6-0 in conference play, 8-1-2 overall. Despite the loss, the Wolves remain in second with a 4-2 mark (6-5-1).

Lindsey Roberts scored both Coupeville goals on free kicks, the second from 25 yards out, but the Wolves were unable to take advantage of other opportunities, according to coach Troy Cowan.

“We should have scored on three corner kicks,” he said. “The ball just pin-balled around in front of the net; we were so close.”

Coupeville dominated possession early, Cowan said, but couldn’t put points on the board. The Eagles didn’t score until 30 minutes into the match.

One positive, Cowan said, was the play of Mallory Kortuem, who kept Klahowya’s top player, Emily Peters, in check.

“Mal did a great job,” Cowan said. “She really frustrated her.”

Cowan also liked that Roberts “finally found her kick.”

“She has been really struggling lately.”

Coupeville goes to Port Townsend (2-4, 3-8-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, and then has a rematch with Klahowya in Silverdale at noon Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Wolves wrap up the regular season with Chimacum (0-6, 1-7-1) at home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.

If Coupeville holds onto second place, it will play in Oak Harbor in the first round of the playoffs Saturday, Oct. 29.
