Editorial: A Festival time in Oak Harbor

Holland Happening 2009 officially begins Friday, April 24, but in fact it starts Thursday when the carnival comes to town. Holland Happening in Oak Harbor is a state of mind, and when kids see the carnival, their celebratory joy spreads to the entire community.

For decades, Holland Happening in April has served as the official beginning of spring on North Whidbey Island. We all know that the technical start of spring can mean more cold winds and freezing temperatures. But by late April the buds are blooming, the air is warmer and we even get to enjoy blue sky from time to time. It’s the perfect time for a community celebration.

Thousands of people annually enjoy the many offerings associated with the Holland Happening celebration. Make sure this year that you’re one of them. It’s easy for busy islanders not to appreciate what is happening in their midst. Take this opportunity to get out and have some fun, celebrate with your neighbors and show your family a great time without having the expense and anxiety of traveling elsewhere. A good place to start is the carnival. If you’re too old for the roller coaster, watching young people enjoy themselves is invigorating enough.

Some of the highlights of the coming weekend include the First Reformed Church Dutch Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday; the Grand Parade at 11 a.m. Saturday; the downtown sidewalk sale and farmers market; the Garden Club plant sale Saturday; entertainment both Saturday and Sunday; and the Klompfen Canal Races Sunday. Special pages in today’s Whidbey News-Times give a complete listing of activities.

Whatever the weather — and we always have reason to hope for the best — Holland Happening is a time to celebrate with friends and neighbors, and to make new friends. And while you’re at it, say thanks to some of the people who make it happen, particularly the Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce and sponsoring businesses. Remember that Holland Happening doesn’t just happen, and then go out and enjoy yourself.
