Eight named first-team all-stars

Winter sports seasons in the Cascade Conference and the WesCo North get underway this week with the Coupeville and Oak Harbor high school girls basketball teams in action along with the Oak Harbor boys swim team. By the weekend all of the teams at both schools will have played their first game or wrestled in their first match, and athletes will be going full throttle until state championship time.

By the weekend all of the teams at both schools will have played their first game or wrestled in their first match, and athletes will be going full throttle until state championship time.

With the end of the fall sports season, all-star selections have been made and the Wildcats and Wolves were both well represented.

In football, senior Greg Goebel was named a first-team WesCo North inside linebacker and sophomore Ian Smith was voted a first-team Cascade Conference defensive back.

Senior foreign exchange student Linde Maertens from Coupeville was voted a first-team volleyball all-star by opposing Cascade Conference coaches and senior hitter Jessica Muzzall from Oak Harbor was named a first-team WesCo North volleyball all-star.

In cross country, sophomores Tyler King and Allison Duvenez were both voted first-team all-star performers. King attends Coupeville and Duvenez is a student at Oak Harbor, but both run on the Oak Harbor team.

Senior Carson McKole was named a first-team soccer all-star for her efforts on the field for the Wildcats and Oak Harbor senior Derek Thomas, one of the top four singles tennis players in the WesCo North, was also named an all-star.

Earning second-team honors in football for the Wildcats were senior lineman Chris Neumiller and senior kicker Kevin Flavin and junior running back Donovan Hunton offense, and sophomore defensive end Yale Rosen, along with junior defensive back Clarence Lamont.

Oak Harbor senior hitter Jennifer Jansen was voted a second-team WesCo North volleyball all-star and junior defender Caitlyn Phillips from Coupeville was named a second-team Cascade Conference soccer all-star.

Sophomore cross country runner Adrianna Royal and senior captain Joshua Duhrkopf rounded out the second-team WesCo North all-league selections.
