Their stature was small but their smiles were big.
Coupeville High School cheerleaders of the future performed at halftime of the CHS girls basketball game Friday, Feb. 7.
Members of the junior cheer program skipped across the high school gym floor then put on a show for the large crowd, culminating a month of practice.
Coupeville High School cheer coach Cheridan Eck said 54 girls took part in this year’s camp, meeting after school once a week to learn the art of cheer.
Nearly half the girls, 23, were first-graders. Six kindergarteners, 11 second-graders and 14 girls grades 3-5 took part.
The program is used by the high school cheer team as a fundraiser.
The high school girls, however, get more than income when helping out at the camp, Eck said: “They learn about themselves on how to give the positive gift of cheer and dance.”
“The CHS cheerleaders get a lot out of the experience by working with younger kids,” Eck added. “There’s a sense of pride when a group of children looks at you with this awe in their eyes and you see them get that move for the very first time.”
Eck is also considering offering a dance/tumbling class throughout the summer “so these kids have something to do.”
