The Coupeville High School girls basketball team suffered two losses last week, each covering a different set of emotions.
The Wolves fell 30-27 in a heartbreaker to visiting Sultan Tuesday and then picked up positive vibes in a 78-42 loss to first-place Archbishop Murphy in Everett Friday.
A disputed call in the final seconds ended Coupeville’s comeback effort against Sultan.
The Turks (5-6, 5-12) led 44-38 with one minute left, but the Wolves weren’t through.
Amanda Fabrizi, who scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the final frame, hit a jumper to make it 44-40. After a defensive stop, Fabrizi struck again. This time she was fouled on a drive and drained two free throws to slice the gap to two with 16 seconds left.
Coupeville then got the turnover it needed — at least that is what it thought — when Sultan failed to inbound the ball in five seconds. However, another official overruled the decision, saying the Sultan coach called timeout before the violation.
After the timeout, Sultan inbounded and Coupeville fouled. The Turks hit both free throws, then added another with six seconds remaining.
Coach David King said Fabrizi played “her best game of the season.”
Bessie Walstad had six points and five rebounds, Hailey Hammer and Lauren Escalle scored five points each, McKana Stone, back after an illness, finished with three points and Jai’Lysa Hoskins had two points and 11 boards.
In regard to the ATM game, King said, “Despite the score and loss, this is a game we can take a lot of positives from and help us finish the season strong.”
King praised the play of Bree Messner, who has “really elevated her game at both ends of the court;” Hoskins, who “brings a toughness to the team;” and Walstad, who “had another good game.”
Fabrizi scored 13 points, Stone nine, Hoskins six, Hammer six, Messner five and Madeline Strasburg three. Escalle missed the game with an injury.
Coupeville (3-9, 5-13) played Granite Falls (0-12, 0-17) Tuesday; results were not available at press time. The Wolves play at 7 p.m. Friday at King’s (9-3, 12-6).
