Golf team uses balance to move atop its division

The Oak Harbor boys golf team currently shares a portion of the Western Conference North A division lead not because one player has shined, but due to an all around team effort.

Right now, the Wildcats have seven players ranked in the top 12 for the best scoring average in the WesCo North A division.

“I have seven players who all seem to be right in the mix,” OHHS head coach John Matzen said. “I have experienced this before, but it’s not very common. It adds a lot for us.”

And because of its depth, Oak Harbor has earned nine points and is tied with Arlington for first place after two divisional matches.

The Wildcats took the first of those matches on Tuesday, winning with 401 strokes on their home course at Whidbey Golf and Country Club. Arlington (413), Mount Vernon (429) and Stanwood (455) rounded out the field.

“The course played hard today,” Matzen said. “Putting was tough.

We often talk about ways to score better when your game is not real sharp, I think we did that today.”

Arlington’s Alex Hedlund took medalist honors, shooting a 2-over par, 74, but it was consistency that led Oak Harbor to the victory.

The Wildcats had five of their six varsity players shoot between 79 and 81 to push them over the top.

Senior Matt Holmly led the way, scoring a team-best 79. Junior AJ Davis and sophomore Josh Whitley shot 80s, while senior Robert Tercero and freshman Phil Reedy had 81s.

Senior Stephan Steitenroth rounded out the Wildcat scorers with an 87.

Arlington got its revenge Thursday, winning a four-team divisional meet at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon.

The Eagles shot an impressive 379, behind a 3-under par, 69 from Chad Heise and a 1-under par, 71 from Hedlund.

“Two scores under par and two more in the 70s is pretty hard to beat,” Matzen said.

Oak Harbor, which shot a 398, was led by Whitley. The sophomore scored a 4-over par, 76 — the third best score of the day. Whitley is currently in third place in the league in scoring.

The Wildcats’ scoring was rounded out by Davis and Holmly with 80s, Reedy and sophomore Eric McCardle with 81s and Tercero with an 85.

Oak Harbor plays in its next divisional match Monday, April 24 at Gleneagle Golf Course in Arlington.
