A 22-year-old Navy man is accused of entering his ex-girlfriend’s home in the middle of the night and assaulting her and her new boyfriend as they were asleep in bed, court documents allege.

Prosecutors charged Edgardo Pabonbaez in Island County Superior Court Nov. 2 with assault in the second degree and assault in the fourth degree.

Detective Jim Hoagland with the Oak Harbor Police investigated the complaint after a 27-year-old man reported that he was the victim of an assault. The man said he was sleeping over at his girlfriend’s home on Gemstone Drive last month when he was awakened by the sound of someone coming into the bedroom.

The victim alleged that a man who was a stranger to him, later identified as Pabonbaez, sat on top of him and started hitting him in the head and face. The victim said Pabonbaez eventually stopped hitting him and he was able to get out of the house and call for help, Hoagland’s report indicates.

Hoagland interviewed the woman, who had moved to Seattle because she was afraid of Pabonbaez. She said she had broken up with Pabonbaez months prior to the incident.

The woman said she woke up to find Pabonbaez on top of her boyfriend, hitting him in the face. She said Pabonbaez started hitting her after her boyfriend got away. She said she tried to get away, but Pabonbaez held her down, hit her face and head and choked her, the police report states.

The woman claimed Pabonbaez grabbed her by the hair and threw her down the stairs, apparently causing her to lose consciousness, Hoagland wrote. The woman went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a broken cheek bone.

The victim alleged that Pabonbaez had previously assaulted her when he came home from deployment early and discovered that she was in the process of moving her stuff out of their residence. She said she spent two weeks in Harborview Medical Center from a ruptured spleen that occurred when he hit her, according to police report.

In addition, Pabonbaez allegedly admitted to the assault in a phone call to his parents that he made from the Oak Harbor jail; the call was recorded and turned over to investigators.

Pabonbaez allegedly told his father that he went into his ex-girlfriend’s house, found her in bed with another man, “went crazy” and beat up the man, court documents state.
