A last-second shot fell short and the Coupeville High School girls basketball team lost 32-30 to visiting South Whidbey in the season opener Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Coupeville’s Makana Stone missed a 15-foot jumper as time expired, and the Falcons escaped with the win.

It was a fitting end to a game where the Wolves couldn’t quite get into synch.

Both teams displayed first-game jitters, struggling to score in the opening quarter.

Stone hit a hoop off an assist from Mia Littlejohn two minutes into the game, and it took two-and-half more minutes before the Falcons would score the game’s next points.

South Whidbey led 4-3 after the first eight minutes.

From that point, Coupeville played catchup until the middle of the third quarter.

Falcon reserve Kolby Heggenes scored seven points in the second quarter and South Whidbey led 15-10 at the half.

Stone was the only Wolf to hit a field goal in the first two periods, scoring eight of Coupeville’s 10 points.

The Wolves opened the second half on a 7-1 run to take a 17-16 lead. The spurt was fueled by Kailey Kellner, who  hit two shots, including a three-pointer, and Littlejohn, who added a bucket.

Littlejohn’s long three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer rattled out and the two clubs entered the fourth period tied at 23.

South Whidbey twice built five-point leads in the final quarter; the second, 32-27, came with 1:35 remaining.

Coupeville’s Lauren Grove sank a free throw, then Littlejohn nailed a runner with four seconds remaining to make it 32-30.

A South Whidbey violations on the following inbounds play returned the ball to the Wolves with 2.8 seconds left, but Stone’s game-tying attempt was off line.

Stone produced a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds; she also had seven steals and three blocks.

Littlejohn ended with eight points and four assists; Kellner had five points and 10 boards.

Kyla Briscoe scored two points, and Grove, Lindsey Roberts and Tiffany Briscoe one each.

Grove added seven rebounds, and Lauren Rose had two blocks.

Kinsey Eager led South Whidbey with nine points.

Coupeville and South Whidbey both play in the Tip Off Classic in Friday Harbor this weekend.

The Wolves play Overlake at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. Friday Harbor and South Whidbey face off in the other game. The winners play at 1:30 Saturday; the losers meet at 10 a.m.
