FBI agents were in Oak Harbor Tuesday to arrest a man charged in federal court with sexually abusing children, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Oak Harbor officers assisted in arresting the suspect, Austin M. Burak, during a traffic stop on the north end of the city, according to Police Chief Tony Slowik.
The U.S. Attorney filed an indictment with four charges against Burak on Jan. 10 in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Georgia.
Specifically, a grand jury charged him with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor engaged in sexual activity, abusive sexual contact with a child, coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
The indictment was originally sealed but was unsealed once Burak was arrested.
The alleged sexual assaults occurred in August 2017 at the Fort Stewart Military Reservation, which is why he was charged in federal court. The indictment indicates that there were two child victims. One victim was younger than 12 years old and the other was between the ages of 12 and 16.
Burak appeared in federal court Wednesday and is being held pending a hearing on Jan. 29.
Documents in state court indicate that Burak has been living in Oak Harbor.
