Congratulations on Marcia Van Dyke’s and George Churchill’s response (Whidbey News-Times, Nov. 13) to the council. Their reaction vividly points out that we elect politicians to use their good sense, experience and political savvy to make decisions. Not so they can farm out Oak Harbor’s problems to a high-priced $48,000 expert.

Our elected officials should make use of citizens polls, ballot initiatives, staff advice, questionnaires, hearings, non-profit organizations and local committees to bolster decision making.

There is no guarantee for any venture, but a well-meaning, citizen-led effort can glean optimum local input, and rightly bear the responsibility for any results.

Would, perhaps, a “Do Nothing Here” plaque fit nicely on the Oak Harbor City Council’s table?
