Recently, on a beautiful summer day, I took a walk in City Beach Park, now Windjammer Park. I sat on one of the benches and looked around me. I could see mountains, water, boats, eagles and various other birds in the sky. People were swimming in the lagoon; children were in the wading pools; and families were having picnics. Others were seated on the grass, reading or sunning themselves. On the Fourth of July, there were so many people in the park that an empty spot was hard to find, and the population of Oak Harbor is increasing rapidly.
The park, with its open space, is one of the best assets that Oak Harbor has. Maybe we should think twice before adding things, like a convention center, that would use up the open space. Could locations outside the park be found?
