Comments regarding Matt Williams’ letter, “Bag Stadium, build high school,” Whidbey News-Times, Jan. 26:

I was very pleased that a high school junior would take the time to write a letter, and write it so well. Both are not easy to find in many high schools today. The citizens who make up the activists and backers who wish to build a sports complex are interested in very specific objectives and benefits. Those include 1) development of the two most important traits that apply to a successful life: attitude and work habits, which are motivated by sports and athletics; 2) an appreciation for physical education; 3) a safe place to execute such activities; 4), facilities that parents, residents and citizens can enjoy visiting.

The process that results in building a high school is very complex and involves various layers of government and public funding, and many millions of dollars. The cost of building the sports complex is much more modest, a fraction of the cost to build a school, and is a much more likely and attainable goal for a small group of activists and giving neighbors.
