A 22-year-old Oak Harbor woman accused of breaking a bottle over another woman’s head appeared in court last week.

Prosecutors charged Melissa Brown in Island County Superior Court with second-degree assault.

At the hearing, Judge Vickie Churchill approved a harassment no-contact order barring Brown from communicating with six people involved in the July 26 fight at Oak Harbor’s Windjammer Park.

The bad blood between the two women started to boil at the Element Nightclub in downtown Oak Harbor. The 22-year-old alleged victim said she was dancing when Brown started yelling and took a swing at her, according to a report by Detective Teri Gardner with the Oak Harbor Police.

The police were called, but the fight was resolved before they arrived.

But later, the woman went to meet Brown at Windjammer Park to resolve the problem between them. They started arguing and Brown struck her on the head with a bottle of Patron tequila, the report states. Witnesses said the bottle “exploded” on her head and the victim was covered in blood, Gardner wrote.

The alleged victim’s husband said a group of “girls” then attacked his wife, so he and another man tried to pull them off.

The victim “was so mad, did not realize she was hurt and bleeding and took Melissa (Brown) to the ground,” Gardner wrote.

The victim sustained a laceration requiring 35 stitches, a broken nose and numerous cuts and scrapes. She lost a significant amount of blood, but the injuries were not life threatening, the report indicates.

Brown admitted she was “really, really drunk,” but denied hitting anyone with a bottle, Gardner wrote. She said she passed out after the woman knocked her to the concrete.
