Ferry system braces for abundance of travelers

About 67,000 travelers are expected to take a ferry either to or from Whidbey this Thanksgiving.

Around 67,000 travelers are expected to take a state ferry either to or from Whidbey Island this Thanksgiving.

Thursday morning, Washington State Ferries announced that the system expects 300,000 riders over the holiday travel period, which spans from Wednesday, Nov. 27 to Sunday, Dec. 1.

“The busiest sailings for vehicles will likely be westbound (or onto an island) Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 27-28, then eastbound (or off island) Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29-30,” the press release stated.

Justin Fujioka, a spokesperson for the ferry system, said 55,000 riders are expected on the Mukilteo-Clinton route and 12,000 are anticipated for the Port Townsend-Coupeville route.

The predictions are based on data from last year, which showed Thanksgiving Day as the busiest day of travel for the Clinton route, with 13,003 riders. For the Coupeville route, however, the following day was peak travel time, with 2,488 travelers aboard.

As always, the ferry system advises customers to download the Washington State Department of Transportation app or visit the Washington State Ferries’ website before heading to a terminal. The app and website allow users to access sailing schedules, view traffic cameras, check for rider alerts, monitor a real-time map and make vehicle reservations.
