A fire discovered around noon Friday damaged a home between Oak Harbor and Coupeville.

Firefighters responded to a call of a home ablaze on Williams Road located off Hastie Lake Road southwest of Oak Harbor.

It turned out a storage room adjacent to the home’s garage had caught fire.

Joel Zimmermann, one of three people inside the home at the time of the incident, opened the door to the storage shed to see the problem.

It slammed back shut and flames started shooting out of a vent.

“It was insane,” said Zim-mermann.

He emptied two fire extinguishers to douse the blaze by the time firefighters from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue arrived. Once the blaze was extinguished, firefighters looked for potential hotspots, investigated the cause, and set up fans to air out the home.

Mike Brown, deputy chief for North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, said he didn’t know yet as to what caused the fire in the storeroom addition and it’s still under investigation.

He estimates the damage at around $10,000.

Zimmermann was examined by paramedics because he inhaled smoke when he was attempting to extinguish the fire, but he said he was OK.

No other injuries were reported.

Family members said at press time they were not sure whether they will spend the night in the home.
