I had a deja vu experience when I read Wes Heckathorn’s “Sound off” column in the Saturday paper. I have a clear view of the Coupeville High School flagpole from the front windows of my home. I almost went over to the school myself last week to complain about the condition of the flag. It is not only in disposable condition, but it was wrapped around the pole and hung like wet, throw-away pantyhose on a bathtub curtain rod. Talk about no respect.

Imagine my surprise shortly after when I drove by the school to see at least a dozen beautiful black, white and red flags waving merrily in the wind to announce to the community that a basketball game would be in the affordable, newly-renovated gym that night.

The Navy is already doing more than enough for the kids in Coupeville. Mr. Principal ought not to be asking them to purchase flags too.

The American flag reflects thanks, respect and honor. It ought to reflect some community patriotism too. Shame on Coupeville schools for supporting an administrator who showed disrespect to a military parent by suggesting that he get the Navy to buy new American flags for the school district because replacing them is too expensive for the school budget. Arms, leg and lives are their contribution. Should they be asked to give more?

Only red, black and white flags are affordable in Coupeville? Somebody needs some “thinking time” in the Time-Out Room.
