At least four people from Whidbey Island are asking to be appointed to the state senate position that will be empty at the end of the month.

Past president of the Oak Harbor Area Council of the Navy League Steve Bristow, Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christine Cribb, Ron Muzzall, of 3 Sisters Farm, and Damian Greene, a board member for the South Whidbey School District, have all asked to be considered, according to Allen McPheeters, chairman of the Island County Republican Party.

State Sen. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, is resigning her office effective Sept, 30.

Under the state Constitution, the state Republican party is required to submit a list of three nominees to fill the vacancy. Precinct officers from the 10th Legislative District, which is comprised of Island County and portions of Skagit and Snohomish counties, will choose the three nominees.

McPheeters said he anticipates additional applicants over the next week or two.

There are also potential applicants from the areas of Skagit and Snohomish counties in the 10th District, he said, but none have confirmed their interest so far.

Candidates for the position will be interviewed during a special meeting of precinct officers at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Mount Vernon Christian School.

County commissioners from the three counties will hold a joint meeting and select one of the three nominees to fill the rest of Bailey’s term, which goes through 2020.
