Free hope repairs for the needy are available through the new Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers program, patterned after the program that has been so successful on South Whidbey.

Alice Schisel, an organizer of the first Central Whidbey event, said about a dozen home repair applications have been received to date. There is no cost to homeowners for home repair and maintenance projects accepted by Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers. Applications will be accepted until April 29. Families desiring assistance should email cwheartsandhammers@gmail.com, call 360-240-2964, or send regular mail to 107 S Main St., Suite C102, Coupeville, WA 98239.

“We also need volunteers for our first Workday, Saturday, May 30,” Schisel said. “All skill levels are welcome and volunteers don’t need to be pros.”

People are needed for both major and minor home repairs and maintenance tasks, painting, gardening, trash collecting, etc. Those interested in helping out can pick up a volunteer application at one of the following Coupeville and Greenbank locations and return it by May 15: Prairie Center Market, Whidbey Island Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Coupeville Library, Coupeville Town Hall, Post Office, Linds, Greenbank Store or County Deli.

Prospective volunteers can also contact Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers via the email and voice message numbers above. Volunteers from South Whidbey’s Hearts & Hammers are cordially invited to participate.

“As with any volunteer organization, especially one getting underway at a time when there is such concern for the economy, Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers needs money,” Schisel added. Tax deductible contributions are needed to pay for construction and repair materials and equipment, should be sent to the above address.
