The Community Foundation for Coupeville Schools is gearing up for more fundraising.

The organization, which provides mini grants and scholarships, is looking to refurbish its coffers after awarding several grants this year.

So far the foundation has awarded seven mini grants for special projects or programs in the classroom.

“We are excited to meet their requests and share with the community what the foundation for Coupeville schools has been doing this year and some wonderful ways that folks can continue the good work that they have helped foster at Coupeville schools,” said Diane Eelkema, vice president of the group.

The awards have gone toward a fifth-grade trip to Coronet Bay, Young Authors Conference and a trip to the Washington State History Museum.

Three fundraisers are in the works, including one this weekend.

Coupeville restaurants will host a day where a percentage of the proceeds from the day’s sales will go to the foundation.

Eat at Ciao, 701 N. Main St. anytime on Monday, Feb. 25, Front Street Grill, 20 N.W. Front Street on Thursday, March 28 or Christopher’s, 103 N.W. Coveland St. on Tuesday, April 30.

The Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools has provided senior scholarships, needy kids funds, extracurricular fees, and mini grants to teacher to allow them to do enriching projects that aren’t in the regular budget.

“The foundation provides the vehicle for donations to the school.” Eelkema said.

The foundation was started in 1997 when a local man died in the community and left money and a truck to the school district, Eelkema said. With no way to receive the funds the foundation was started. The foundation usually gives 4-6 thousand to mini grants.

Teachers with ideas for an innovations in teaching, an extensive field trip, an equipment need that is unusual or unique to a class, apply to the foundation with their request.

“We evaluate the request and if the mini grant will provide” an extra measure of support” the foundation will fund all or a partial amount,” Eelkema said.

They also have a needy kids fund, a senior scholarship program, and donors can contribute through the foundation to things like: History Day, Science Olympiad, drama club, jazz band etc.
