Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed Aug. 4-10 Washington Farmers Market Week.

The popularity in farmers markets continues to increase with an estimated 150-plus markets across the state.

Regional news outlets reported there is an increasing trend in consumers wanting fresh, locally grown produce, meats, cheeses and specialty foods.

Lucky for Whidbey Island residents, there’s an abundance of options on Whidbey Island, including ones in our own back yard.

Four out of seven days a week there’s an outdoor or farmers market to attend somewhere on the island, and shopping at these seasonal markets is a great way to support local vendors.

Attending markets is also a great way to try out different produce and learn different ways of preparing fresh foods.

One of the best aspects of shopping at the various markets is the ability to talk directly to the vendors and growers. Most are eager to share information about their products.

It’s clear they take pride in their work and the quality of their produce and other products. Most readily share cooking methods and ideas.

Oak Harbor’s market operates 4-7 p.m. Thursdays and is located on State Highway 20 near the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

Make your way down the island and more market fun can be found throughout the rest of the week.

Coupeville Farmers Market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday. The market is located on the community green behind the public library.

South Whidbey has four open air markets for residents to attend Thursday through Sunday.

Thursdays explore fresh produce, flowers and other wares at the Clinton Market. Whidbey’s newest market also offers music, food and a beer and wine garden.

The Clinton market is located off State Highway 525 behind Dairy Queen.

On Fridays, Langley holds its Second Street Market 3-7 p.m. The market offers produce, flowers, music and local demonstrations.

Bayview Farmers Market, near Bayview Corner, is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday.

One of the Whidbey Island’s largest markets, Bayview is a fun, lively gathering that features a wide variety of vendors offering produce, fresh-baked goods, ready-to-eat foods and beverages.

If purely organic is your preference, the Tilth Market operates 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays on Highway 525 south of Freeland.
