I had a eye opening experience last Friday when I was heading south on Taylor Road. It was the day when the roads were icy and gravel trucks were out. As I was coming up the hill to the stop sign on Taylor and Sleeper roads, here came an Island County gravel truck heading west on Sleeper Road carrying a full load of sand. He turned right, ran the stop sign and was going too fast to stay in his lane which brought him into my lane and when swerving to get the truck back into his lane he dumped sand that was way above the rim of the truck in front of me.

It made me realize that this is what we are going to have to contend with on a daily basis on Taylor and Frostad roads if the county allows the gravel pit to come into our neighborhood. How many wrecks are going to happen due to the lack of consideration some drivers have? How many children are being put into danger as they wait for the school bus? How many joggers and bicyclists are in danger?

Unfortunately it seems to take a death to make cities/counties finally say “oops, we should have listened when the people spoke,” and then it is too late for those who lost the loved one. I pray the county listens to our concerns and says no to the gravel pit proposals.
