Commissioners for the Port of Coupeville are exploring a new security system after thousands of dollars of tools were stolen from the Greenbank Farm last week.
Damon Stadler, the facilities maintenance manager, told commissioners that an estimated $2,000 in hand and power tools were stolen from the tractor barn.
The farm does have a security system, but the camera near that barn was not working at the time of the burglary, said Forrest Rambo, executive director.
The Organic Farm School also uses space in that barn, but not much was taken from it, Stadler said.
The burglary was discovered the morning of Tuesday, April 26.
Stadler said he believes the burglary may be related to an incident at the farm from the day before. He said for two weeks prior a car was parked in a service area of the farm and a person was sleeping in the woods. After two weeks, the vehicle was towed on Monday, April 25.
Stadler said someone used a crowbar or something similar to open the barn. The hood to the lawn mower was off and the perpetrator unsuccessfully attempted to siphon fuel from it. However, all additional fuel stored in the barn was taken.
Stadler said he’s submitted an inventory to the Island County Sheriff’s Office. All of the tools stolen were engraved with “POC” for “Port of Coupeville.” Most of the tools were newly acquired and the port still held receipts for them.
The burglary is also being reported and should be covered by the port’s insurance policy, Rambo said. “When it’s all said and done, it’ll be about $2,000.”
