With the new addition of the standardized Long Life Vehicles, or LLVs, the Greenbank Post Office is requiring its customers raise their mailboxes by as much as a foot.

Behind the mandate is a nationwide consolidation of routes, and the postal service-owned LLVs are now being issued out for use on routes that previously relied on employees’ to use their own vehicles to deliver mail.

Because LLVs are higher off the ground, mail carriers must unbuckle their seat belts and lean out the window to deliver mail.

That, according to the postal service, is a safety hazard.

Greenbank received new vehicles in January and wants the required height changes made by summer.

“Obviously, we want it done as quickly as possible,” said the Greenbank Post Office’s Office in charge, who declined to provide her name. “It’s a safety issue.”

The post office issued notices to its customers and will send out second and third notices if the changes aren’t made.

After that, according to the officer in charge, the customer will have to go to the post office to retrieve their mail.

If customers notify the post office of when their mailboxes will be fixed, there will be no curtailing of mail delivery service.
