This photo of a group of orcas was taken Tuesday, June 16 at approximately 12:45 p.m. on the west side of Whidbey Island.
The background in the photo is Ebey’s Landing, and the whales are Biggs Killer Whales from three different pods, the T34s, T37Bs and T65As.
The photographer, Jill Hein said she believes 13 whales were present, but just eight are in the photo.
The whales were traveling southbound, Hein said, though they first they went northbound, then flipped before reaching Fort Ebey and headed back southbound.
Biggs orca feed on marine mammals, including seals, sea lions, porpoise, as opposed to the endangered Southern Resident orcas, which eat fish, Hein said.
Hein, who lives south of Coupeville, is a board member with Orca Network, has been a volunteer whale naturalist for many years, and is avid amateur photographer.
