Showing no signs of a letdown after being eliminating from playoff contention in its previous game, Klahowya defeated the Coupeville High School football team 45-12 Friday, Oct. 21, in Silverdale.
The Eagles (3-2, 5-3) lost 27-19 to Port Townsend (5-0, 6-2) Monday, which put the Redhawks and Cascade Christian (4-0, 7-0) into the playoffs.
For Coupeville, it was a game of misfortune. Four turnovers, a touchdown wiped out by a penalty, a fourth-down play that ended at the half-yard line and the failure to score on first-and-goal from the 1 all helped Klahowya pull away for the lopsided win.
The Wolves also lost leading rusher Jacob Martin for the season when he fractured his thumb in the first quarter. Jacob Zettle suffered a concussion.
Klahowya was paced by seniors Gabe Wallis and Dylan Zuber.
Wallis got things going by scoring on a 58-yard run in the Eagles’ first possession. By halftime, Klahowya led 24-0.
Wallis finished the game with 202 yards on the ground on 19 carries, good for three scores.
Zuber, the Eagles’ quarterback, ran for 131 yards on 11 carries.
The pair also paced the Eagles’ defense. Wallis had 23 tackles (14 solo) and Zuber intercepted three passes.
Coupeville registered its first touchdown in the third quarter when Hunter Smith scored from 34-yards out on a pass from Hunter Downes. For the game, Smith caught eight passes for 179 yards.
In the fourth quarter, Teo Keilwitz tallied for the Wolves, recording his first varsity touchdown.
Coupeville (1-4, 2-6) plays Chimacum (0-5, 1-7) at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Port Townsend’s Memorial Stadium.
