The 2015 Harvest Fest Relay Races will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Coupeville Farmers Market.
The relay races are an annual fundraiser for the food bank and the only cash fundraiser it has.
Last year, the relay races raised more than $28,000 for the food bank, a new record.
Coupeville High School’s drama troupe relay team raised the most money last year, with the help of an anonymous donor who matched funds raised.
The race course will consist of “food related” events that are usually kept top secret until the day of the event.
Teams competed last year in pouring-down rain by egg tossing, finding radishes in a pile of hay, turnip tossing, corn shucking and wheelbarrow running.
Prizes are awarded for the most money raised, the best time and the people’s choice award.
Just after the Harvest Fest Relay Races, Dr. Lee Roof will facilitate weighing for the Giant Pumpkin Contest.
Contestants from up and down the island are encouraged to bring their giant and not-so-giant pumpkins for judging and weighing.
There will awards for the prettiest giant, ugliest giant and biggest giant raised by a junior. Big zucchini will also be weighed and growers are invited to bring their big and mutant veggies of any type for viewing. Previous winners have come from Clinton to Oak Harbor.
Contestants are asked to bring their entries to the farmers market around 11 a.m. and weighing will begin following the Gifts From the Heart relay races.
The contest is free and fun for the whole family. For questions, contact Lee at whidbeypumpkins@gmail.com and for information about the relay races, go to www.giftsfromtheheartfoodbank.com.
