An administrative change to the Island County code this week made a recent speed limit reduction on SW Heller Street enforceable.
On Monday, the Island County Commissioners approved the code change that authorizes a speed limit reduction from 40 mph to 35 mph for about two-tenths of a mile of SW Heller Street, from Swantown Avenue north.
According to Bill Oakes, director of Island County Public Works, the county has a right-of-way on the roadway but it’s maintained by Oak Harbor.
The city conducted a speed study and has since reposted the new speed limit, he said.
Oakes said the county code needed to be updated as well so that the new limit was legally enforceable.
A public hearing was held and no one came forward. The measure was approved by the board unanimously.
