“Coupeville Marshall Lenny Marlborough is looking for anyone who witnessed a dangerous car pursuit Friday morning on Highway 20 between Coupeville and Oak Harbor.Marlborough said the chase started after a cellular phone caller reported a reckless, possibly drunk driver on Ebey Road at around 9:15 a.m.He said he caught up with the car on South Main, where the driver was weaving all over the lane and shoulder trying to pass a car and driving at least 40 miles an hour in the 25 mph zone.The car turned north on Highway 20. Marlborough attempted to pull it over, but the driver accelerated away. He said he chased the car until it reached speeds of about 80 miles per hour, but then backed off so he wouldn’t push the driver to go any faster.Marlborough said the driver continued to drive recklessly. He passed numerous cars, forcing them off the road and almost getting into a head-on accident near Rolling Hills.“He was driving like an idiot,” Marlborough said. “How he didn’t hurt someone was just amazing.”After several Island County deputies joined the chase from the opposite direction, Marlborough said the driver finally pulled over near Boon Road, just south of Oak Harbor, and gave up peacefully.The man was arrested on suspicion of driving recklessly, attempting to elude a police vehicle and possession of methamphetamine after some alleged drugs were found in his car. He was also wanted on a felony drug warrant out of Kititas.Marlborough said he wants to speak to anyone who saw the chase or was affected by it, especially the driver of the car that was nearly hit head-on.
