Reductions are temporary
A temporary lower speed limit has been instigated for three miles on Highway 20, from the Miller/Gibralter Road intersection to Meadow Creek, to improve safety for drivers and construction workers.
The speed limit is reduced from 50 mph to 40 mph. The change took effect Friday and continues for the duration of the project.
“Several close calls in recent weeks between drivers and constructions workers have prompted WSDOT to lower the speed limit,” said spokesman Dave Chesson. “There was a serious collision near the Miller Road intersection several weeks ago that sent two WSDOT surveyors to the hospital and severely damaged both vehicles involved.”
The speed limit near Meadow Creek has been temporarily reduced to 40 mph for the last year because of construction in the area.
“Drivers need to be alert and mindful while driving through work zones. The lowered speed limit alone will not keep everyone safe. There are sharp corners and hills that reduce visibility in the area, making it difficult to see what is ahead,” Chesson said.
