Welcome home, Lucas Horrobin.
Horrobin, a 1997 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, returned to the course where he played high school golf to win the 50th annual Whidbey Golf Club Men’s Invitational Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24.
After shooting a two-over 74 and down two strokes to Tracy Vass after the first round, Horrobin captured the lead two holes into the second round and won going away. He birdied two of the final three holes to dash any comeback hopes from runners-up Tim Wyer and Mike Zarraonandia, who tied for second with 149s.
Horrobin, who played collegiately at San Jose State University, finished the second day with a five-under 67 for a two-day winning total of 141 and an eight-stroke victory.
Horrobin’s hot second round broke open a tight tournament. When play concluded Saturday, eight golfers were within three strokes of the lead.
Vass led with a 72, Horrobin and John Henriot carded 74s, and Wyer, Brian Wasinger, Rob Srdar, Doug Pierce and Ron Bates all sat at 75.
While Horrobin was pulling away from the field in the low gross division, Denny Behrman was even more dominant in the low net race, winning by 11 strokes with a 129.
The trio of Roger Pierce, John Matzen and Jeff Rodgers, who all shot 140, finished first in Flight 1 net scoring.
In Flight 2, Arik Dahlen led in low gross with a 160; Alex McCollum was the low net winner at 139.
Dennis Ross captured Flight 3 in low gross with a 164, while John Bates was the net leader with a 139.
Gold Flight leader in low net was Gary Boonstra with a 141.
