An unexpected guest has spent the past couple of weeks at the Coupeville Wharf.
A houseboat being towed from Lake Union in Seattle to Victoria, B.C., sprung a leak late last month and had to be moored at the pier so water can be pumped out. It has been at the wharf ever since.
Jim Patton, executive director for the Port of Coupeville, said during Wednesday’s port meeting that the floating house has to undergo a marine survey to comply with Coast Guard regulations. After that a tug can tow it the remainder of the way to Victoria.
He added that the weather has to be calm before the houseboat can be moved out of Penn Cove.
Since the boat came to Penn Cove, rumors have been swirling about its purpose. One prominent but erroneous rumor is that it’s going to become a floating restaurant. Patton added that people have been calling the port office wanting to buy the leaky boat, but it’s not for sale.
