The North Whidbey Aquatic Club’s John Hu won the boys 15-and-over high- point award at last weekend’s West Coast Invitational swim meet held June 27 and 28 in Federal Way.
Hu won three events, scored in five others, and set a team record of 25.39 in the 50-meter freestyle to lead the Aquajets to an eighth-place team finish with 691 points.
Thirteen teams from Washington, California and British Columbia were entered in the meet.
The meet was won by the King Aquatic Club of Federal Way with 7,981 points.
Laura Rosen, racing in the highly competitive girls 13 and 14-year-old division, also scored in eight events, including winning a silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 5:21.20.
Other Aquajet scorers who finished in the top eight were Konrad Borden, Ciara Hu, Price Hu, Jacob Jepsen, Josh Jepsen, Joey Jepsen, Marissa Morris, Mara Powers, Olivia Tungate, Brett Vagt, Lauren Vagt, Molly Vagt, Cole Weinstein and Cullen Wood.
Eight-year-old Olivia Tungate raced to team records in the 100 breaststroke (1:51.50), the 200 freestyle (2:59.24), the 100 backstroke (1:33.94) and 50 breaststroke (49.97), to improve upon two of her existing records and claim the last two remaining records that had eluded her in the girls 8-and-under category.
Establishing new qualifying marks for the PNS Championships scheduled for Federal Way, July 23 through July 26, were Molly Vagt in the girls 10-and-under 50 butterfly (40.19), 100 backstroke (1:31.29), 200 individual medley (3:13.64) and the 50 breaststroke (48.74).
Also qualifying was Irysh Concepcion in the girls 11 and 12-year-old 400 individual medley (6:17.33).
Cole Weinstein was selected as Aquajet Swimmer of the Meet for his perfect nine of nine personal best individual times and two of two personal best relay times in the boys 13 and 14-year-old division. He improved by an average of two seconds in all of his events.
NWAC competes next at its home meet, the July Tri, July 11 and 12 at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.
The Aquajets will field a team of approximately 80 swimmers.
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.
Tryouts occur at the city pool on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. Breaststroke, butterfly, flip turns and other advanced techniques will be taught. The first two weeks are free.
