Lifted by an incredible 29-0 run, the Stanwood High School boys basketball team flew by host Oak Harbor 70-38 Thursday, Jan. 23.

The Spartans, ranked third in the state 3A poll and owners of a sparkling 16-0 record, couldn’t shake the Wildcats for most of three quarters.

Stanwood used a 10-0 run that bridged the first two periods to lead 10-7 after the first quarter and 29-19 at the break.

The bulge reached 14, 36-22, two-and-a-half minutes into the second half. Oak Harbor responded with its own 14-2 run to make it 38-34 with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Then Stanwood took off, outscoring the Wildcats 32-4 the rest of the way.

After Zach Gibbs scored to make it 41-36 with 2:01 left in the third period, the Wildcats wouldn’t score again until Zach Jones converted a fastbreak lay-in with 48 seconds left in the game.

Turnovers were a problem all night for Oak Harbor; the Wildcats finished with 23 and gave up 23 points off the mistakes.

Stanwood dominated the boards, out-rebounding Oak Harbor 50-31 (20-7 on the offensive end).

Drew Washington topped the ‘Cat scorers with 15 points, all on three-pointers; he also had four blocked shots.

Dyllan Harris had nine points and four assists; and Gibbs, Gabe Groenig and Jones scored four points; and Jordan Davenport had two. Gibbs added six rebounds and Jones five.

Ian Zipp scored 26 points for Stanwood,  Josh Thayer had 16 points and 6-9 Drew Stang finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Oak Harbor coach Mike Washington said his club grew tired and frustrated, which made “the final 10 minutes look not so good.”

The Wildcats (3-6, 3-12) play at Everett (4-4, 7-8) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Everett High School gym is being remodeled, so the game will be played at Everett Community College.
