Island Cheer Extreme Athletics is a new competitive cheerleading gym that opened in September in Anacortes.
ICE, as the team is named, competes throughout Western Washington from Bellingham to Tacoma in a season that runs January through April.
There is also a national competition in Palm Springs, Calif., in March.
The team is coached by Jordan Carlson, who is USASF level 5 certified in all aspects of cheerleading and is also WSCCA certified. She is an Oak Harbor High School cheer alumni.
Coach Ardith Ferigolia is also USASF and WSCCA certified and an alumni of Western Washington University cheer team.
Members of ICE range in age from 4 through 18 and in addition to cheerleading, the group also has a competitive hip hop team.
Today’s cheerleader is an athlete with tumbling skills, endurance, and ablitity to rock the floor in dance, and Island Cheer Extreme Athletics is an excellent way for young people to begin a career.
Teams form in May and practice for competitive season begins in September.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, the team participated in the Sequoia Invitational in Kentwood, the first event of the 2009 season for ICE, and came away with first-place finishes in mini, youth and senior level-one competitions.
Individually, Jember Jansen from Oak Harbor won the gold medal in the junior level individual competition and Angel Williams, also from Oak Harbor, was first in the youth individual.
Sarah Bellis from Oak Harbor finished third in the youth individual and Mica Shipley from Anacortes was third in the mini individual.
The youth stunt group composed of Brittany Kairez and Maggie Irving of Anacortes, and Peyton Carlson, Angel Williams and Olivia Paquete of Oak Harbor were also gold medal winners.

The youth team is composed of Brittany Kairez, Maggie Irving, Naomi Garcia, Jasmine Harris, Hannah Birsinger and Gabby Birsinger from Anacortes, and Peyton Carlson, Sarah Bellis, Mariella Saluderas, Angel Williams and Olivia Paquette from Oak Harbor
Mini team members are Savannah Sevierri, Mica Shipley of Anacortes, Kyla Bellis from Oak Harbor, Presley Simon from La Conner and Darienne Wells from Mount Vernon.
