In a remarkable turnaround, it appears that Island County’s District 2 county commissioner will be reelected, as will the incumbent state senator representing the area.

Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson, a Republican, has moved ahead of Democratic challenger Christina Elliott by 574 votes following the Tuesday night count. That’s a margin of 1.28%.

Likewise, Sen. Ron Muzzall, a Republican from Oak Harbor, has a lead over Janet St. Clair, a Democrat and Camano Island resident. Muzzall has about 51.1% while St. Clair has 48.8% following the count Tuesday.

Both Johnson and Muzzall were behind after the first tally of votes on election night.

Johnson was behind by 6% on election night. She and many of her supporters thought that it would be nearly impossible for subsequent vote counts to turn around the difference.

But the margin narrowed with each new vote count. After the count Friday, Johnson was behind by just two votes.

An estimated 4,500 ballots are left to count in Island County. The next count is scheduled for Wednesday night.

On election night, the race between Muzzall and St. Clair was tight, with St. Clair ahead by 0.3% of the vote. Muzzall moved ahead in the count on Friday.

After the Tuesday count, Muzzall has a more substantial lead.

Muzzall represents Legislative District 10, which covers Island County and parts of Skagit and Snohomish counties.
