Playing “like a bobcat in a phone booth,” according to coach Troy Cowan, the Coupeville High School soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie at Sequim Thursday, Sept. 17.

Coupeville dominated the match and Sequim “ought to be grateful” for the tie, Cowan said.

“Intense is the word of the match,” he added.

Freshman Kalia Littlejohn tallied Coupeville’s goal.

She and her sophomore sister, Mia, were “electric” and “worked their magic to perfection,” according to Cowan.

Cowan was particularly pleased with his defense, led by Jennifer Spark, who nearly scored on two free kicks.

Lindsey Roberts and Lauren Bayne “played great,” Cowan said.

The match was Bayne’s best, according to Cowan: “She was tough, fast, defensive minded and refused to be beaten.”

McKenzie Meyer played “lock-down defense,” and goalkeeper Lauren Grove, in only her second match, was “sensational” and played an “intelligent match,” Cowan added.

“Overall, the team played one heck of a match, and since we have picked up our intensity in practice you can certainly see the difference in our game intensity,” Cowan said.

Part of the credit for the improved play goes to assistant coach Nicholas Dziminowicz, who brought a “breath of freshness to our program,” Cowan said.

The Wolves (1-2-2) take on Orcas Island at home at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.
