Ten days after voters went to the polls, the Island County Canvassing Board certified the Oak Harbor School District levy election results Friday afternoon.
The final results show voters supporting the four-year levy by 68.11 percent margin with 5,431 voting yes and 2,542 voting no.
“That’s a wonderful gift to the students and community of Oak Harbor,†Superintendent Rick Schulte said Friday afternoon.
The 75 cent per $1,000 levy pays for art and physical education teachers at each elementary school, advanced placement and remedial classes at the high school, an extended elementary school day and support for the hot lunch program.
The 68.11 percent support easily exceeded the “supermajority†of 60 percent required for school elections.
Local school supporters have worked to have the levy requirement reduced to a 50 percent yes vote, but that effort has died in the Legislature. After having passed 73-27 in the House Feb. 21, it expired March 16 in the Senate with a 25-23 vote. It needed a two-third majority to go on to the voters in November.
