Coupeville High School will be represented in four state tournaments this week.

Golfer Christine Fields gets things started by taking part in the 1A tournament at the Spanaway Lake Golf Course Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29.

Fields tees off at noon Wednesday.

She placed eighth in the state as a freshman and 15th last year.

Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin, who competed in the state baseball tournament last weekend, get another shot at a state title. The doubles duo will compete in the 1B/2B/1A state tennis tournament at Yakima’s West Valley High School Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31.

The pair will open the 16-team, double-elimination tournament against Neil Campbell and Jedi Main of Naches Valley.

Since schools can choose to compete in boys tennis in the fall or spring, the state tournament is played in the spring after everyone’s regular season is complete.

Though Etzell and Curtin haven’t played since November, coach Ken Stange still believes they have a chance at medaling at state.

“They are so athletic, it wouldn’t surprise me if they place,” he said.

Makana Stone, the Coupeville High School record holder in the 200 and 400 meters, will run in the state 1A track meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31.

Stone will compete in the 400; she enters the meet with the state’s third-best 1A time in the event. The preliminaries for the 400 begin at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Coupeville (8-18) softball team makes its second-ever appearance in the 1A state tournament at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30, at Richland’s Columbia Playfields.

The Wolves meet Warden (18-2) in the opener.

The tournament, which features 16 teams and is double elimination, concludes Saturday.

The Wolves play opposite Okanogan (21-3) and Hoquiam (17-5) in the bracket. The winner of Coupeville/Warden meets the Okanogan/Hoquiam winner at 4 p.m. Friday. The losers face off at 2 p.m.

In 2002, Coupeville finished third, losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Adna.
