“Wayne Scholl parked his 1988 silver Oldsmobile in the south parking lot of Deception Pass bridge Thursday evening, walked to the middle of the span and jumped over the railing.The 57-year-old Redmond man died in the apparent suicide leap at about 4 p.m. Efforts to retrieve Scholl’s body were thwarted when strong currents pulled him under. Why he jumped is unclear.Witnesses saw Scholl walk along the bridge’s west walkway, take off his tan leather jacket at mid-span and toss it over. Then he reportedly grabbed the railing and pulled himself over, rolling head over heels to the water below.Dispatchers with 911 received a call from Scholl’s wife only minutes earlier. Susan Scholl said her husband called her collect at home to say he was at Deception Pass bridge and was going to end it all.From the bridge, Island County Sherrif’s Deputy C.E. Wallace and units from Washington State Parks, the Washington State Patrol and Fire District 2 were able to locate Scholl’s body floating face down, arms outspread in the water near the middle of the channel.During the time that I had him under visual observation the subject never self initiated any movement nor showed any signs of life, Wallace wrote in his report. He noted Scholl was dressed in khaki pants and a burgundy shirt.Rescue boats were directed toward Scholl, but the strong ebb currents sucked him under and no one saw him again. The boat search was called off when darkness fell.It was disheartening, said John Aydelotte, who skippered one of the search boats. A most discouraging loss.Based on information from his wife, officials found Scholl’s Oldsmobile in the parking lot on the Whidbey Island end of the bridge. It was unlocked and the keys were in the ignition. On the front seat was a map of Whidbey Island. On the rear seat was a black briefcase that contained reading glasses, credit cards and a large day planner. No note was found. “
