For the Coupeville High School girls basketball team to have continued success this season, it will need more than one scoring option.
Kailey Kellner provided that much-needed help with a 20-point performance in the Wolves’ 52-38 win over visiting Orcas Island Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Coupeville’s offense is generally carried by reigning Olympic League MVP Makana Stone. And Stone did her double-double thing against Orcas, pouring in 24 points and hauling down 19 rebounds.
Kellner, however, was the spark, hitting a three-pointer to open both halves. Those long-range hoops ignited the Wolves and gave Coupeville an outside threat to complement Stone’s inside play.
Coupeville started the rout with a 9-0 run with Kellner drilling three-balls at the beginning and end.
The Wolves went into the second quarter leading 15-7, then Stone torched the Vikings for 12 points, Kellner added another three, and Coupeville led 32-18 at halftime.
Kellner swished two more three-pointers (she had six in the game) as the Wolves led 45-24 after three periods.
The lead grew to 52-26, then Orcas finished the game on a 12-0 run.
Mia Littlejohn had six points and four assists, and Lauren Grove added two points.
Stone finished another fine all-around game with four steals and four assists.
Coupeville (3-2) begins conference play when it hosts Klahowya at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.
