Digging up what sort of activities are available for children can be a daunting task for parents as the summer approaches.

Two Oak Harbor residents are trying to make the process a little easier.

Oak Harbor’s first “Kids Fair” is 2-5 p.m. today, May 17, at Windjammer Park ,with representatives from more than 25 youth groups, organizations and vendors on hand to feed parents’ information about children’s activities on North Whidbey this summer and beyond.

Each group has been tasked with also offering a children’s activity. The intent of the fair, however, is to inform.

The fair’s motto is, “What’s going on this summer and beyond.”

Curtis Vieke and Amy Hannold worked together to organize the event after listening to parents’ concerns over a perceived shortage of activities for children on Whidbey.

Vieke is a community volunteer, youth sports coach and event planner. Hannold has an online calendar that offers information about children’s events and activities on the island.

“I see it not as a void,” Vieke said. “It’s getting folks to see what there is available.”

Hannold, who has two children, said she hears all the time that there’s nothing to do for kids on Whidbey, especially for teens.

She said she’s trying to get the word out through her website and more visibly through events such as the Kids Fair.

“We want to create an annual event where families can come in a fun atmosphere and plan their summer, but where they can also connect with organizations that serve families in a variety of ways,” Hannold said.

She said vendors will be on hand representing dance teams, soccer and football clubs, the Girl Scouts of America and more.

Entertainment will be provided by magician JR Russell and puppeteer, Capt. TARA.
