Imagine my dismay when just as my group is getting ready to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts there is a column in the Whidbey News-Times calling such fund-raisers a threat (Editor’s Column, May 29).

Our group is made up of kind and caring people. We certainly never intended to threaten anyone’s health by selling “warm and melt-in-your-mouth-gooey” doughnuts at the Island County Dog Leaders’ Fun Match at City Beach on June 15. Our intent was to raise money to purchase agility equipment for our 4-Hers to use with their dogs. Making people fat was not on our minds.

Perhaps you could come and purchase a dozen or two Krispy Kremes and watch the dog show while you eat them. There will be conformation classes, obedience classes, handling classes, a tracking demonstration, and agility practice. The show, which begins at 9:30 a.m., will last most of the day so you can eat a doughnut, watch the show, jog around the park, eat a doughnut, watch the show, jog…

If you really do not want Krispy Kreme doughnuts we are offering several fund-raising alternatives. The first alternative is to enter your dog (all breeds are welcome) in our show. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. near the gazebo. The second alternative would be to donate something for a raffle prize (a one-year subscription to the Whidbey News-Times?). Purchasing raffle tickets is the third healthy alternative that we are offering. We have many items to raffle off on that day.
