The opportunity to make yours chocolate “doughnut-wise” is just about to be completely and utterly threatened! As reported in your newspaper (News-Times, June 1, “Fireworks fundraising”) it’s true. Citing “quality issues,” Krispy Kreme, just a few hours after authorizing our fund-raiser for the food bank, stopped allowing fund-raisers north of Arlington.

So give us a break, and please consider not writing more “doughnuts are over-used” commentary (Editor’s Column, May 29) until we have had a chance to help our food bank. Help us make a success of the last delivered fresh and still a little warm Krispy Kreme fund-raiser around these parts! Do it for the food bank, and because it’s a heck of a long car and ferry trek to Issaquah!

Calorie, cholesterol and sugar mortality issues, as mentioned in your column, will melt away as we have a long list of charitable ideas ready for every doughnut ordered that someone doesn’t want to eat.

Did we mention that this fund-raiser also includes a drawing for a year’s free coffee drinks? It does, and should this perk prompt you or anyone else to plunge into neurotic thoughts of over-consumption of caffeine, consider giving it away (if you’re lucky enough to win it in the first place) as a gift to a coffee loving, caffeine resistant friend or relative.

We loved your baseball references that clearly indicate your understanding of the game. So, we know you will be cheering for us to hit a good ol’ fashioned bases-loaded HR (home run) for our food bank down here in Central Whidbey (south of all of those doughnut-filled coffee tables in Oak Harbor) where our much smaller and spread out population means we have to play the game with a whole lot of heart to make a few bucks for the cause.

With only a few days left to go, we thank you for printing this letter and appreciate any orders it may generate. Pre-orders have to be placed before 10 a.m. Friday, June 14. Doughnut pick-up is the following Friday morning.
