A 21-7 scoring run that began late in the third quarter and lasted to the end of the game erased a 39-31 Mount Vernon Christian lead and gave the Coupeville boys basketball team its first win of the year with a 52-46 victory over the Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Coming off a heartbreaking 64-61 loss to Sequim Dec. 2, the Wolves are now 1-1 on the season.
“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but we picked it up at the end,†coach Randy King said. “The guys played hard and that is what the game is all about, effort. They gave a lot of effort in the last quarter or so.â€
Mount Vernon Christian held a 24-23 halftime lead and were up by eight points in the third period before the Wolfpack caught fire.
Casey Larson scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter when Coupeville outscored Mount Vernon Christian 15-5 to put the game in the book.
“I got a lot of close in, high-percentage shots,†he said.
Kramer O’Keefe scored 16 points and praised the play of teammate James Smith.
“James played really good defense on Daniel VanderKooy, number 20,†O’Keefe said. “He had a big first half and we put James on him in the second half and shut his scoring off. We moved the ball around, played good defense and shot the ball pretty well. We also got some big baskets there toward the end of the game.â€
VanderKooy scored a game-high 18 points for the Hurricanes, but was held to just three in the second half.
Sequim 64, Coupeville 61
In the season-opening game Dec. 2, a controversial call on a foul in the waning seconds gave Sequim possession of the ball and Coupeville lost its first game of the 2006/07 season 64-61.
Larson scored 21 points to lead the Wolves and O’Keefe had 15.
Brian Miller had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
“We didn’t shoot free throws as well as we could have and this is what cost us the game,†King said.
Coupeville went to the charity stripe 17 times and hit just six shots.
