The Coupeville High School softball team was unable to match two late runs by visiting Meridian and fell 10-8 Saturday, April 23.

The Wolves will try to shake of the non-conference loss as they head into a week that features three Olympic League games.

First, Coupeville (2-2, 7-5) will get a crack at first place Chimacum when the Cowboys (3-0, 7-4) visit at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 25. Chimacum beat the Wolves 7-4 April 14.

Wednesday, Coupeville goes to Klahowya (1-1, 6-5), then Port Townsend (0-3, 0-8) visits Friday. Both games are at 4 p.m. The Wolves lost to Klahowya 7-1 April 19 and have 10-runned Port Townsend twice.

In the Meridian game, Coupeville’s offense got hotter as the game went along then dried up the final two innings.

The Wolves scored once in each of the first two innings.

In the bottom of the first, Lauren Rose singled and eventually scored on a passed ball. In the second, Kailey Kellner doubled and, too, scored on a passed ball.

Meridian took the lead with a three-run third, then Coupeville grabbed it right back with two runs in the bottom half on a double by Veronica Crownover, scoring Katrina McGranahan, who singled, and Sarah Wright, who reached on an error.

Coupeville made it 5-3 in the fourth on a triple by Rose and a single Hope Lodell.

Meridian responded with five runs with the help of a shaky Coupeville defense in the fifth.

Coupeville countered with three runs to knot the match.

Crownover doubled, then four walks mixed around a hit by Jae LeVine enabled the Wolves to tie it at 8.

From that point, Coupeville would put only one runner on over the final two innings while Meridian scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Rose, McGranahan, Crownover and LeVine each finished with two hits. Kellner and Lodell had one each.

Pitcher McGranahan struck out nine and walked eight.

“This was a very winnable game,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “I feel as though we let this one get away.”
